Well my friends let me share my secret that's getting me through gradschool. It's called Google patents at [...] if you are ever curious how something works. Look it up, don't rely on some tool to tell you that "because it does not have a ground wire it can't work" because he/she is wrong. The Patent number for this device is US 6400995. The best part is, Google Patents is free! When you look at patents almost all if it is a bunch of junk except near then end you will find "claims". This bait can be hidden in feeders on a small spike or just left out in the open if it's away from other pets and kids that may get at it. The rats are drawn to it and die, it's that simple. I have not done a precise side by side although I have used both Tom Cat & Contrac at the same time in two different parts of my well rat-populated Florida property, although I mostly relied on the Contrac blox The population completely collapsed within about a week. Naturally there were a few dead "stinkers" that I never found, but most apparently died outside the structures. The bait was eagerly eaten every time I placed it in active areas. When the bait stopped being eaten, I knew the rats were all gone. That was 6 weeks ago and have not heard or seen a single rat yet. We plugged it in, but the mice still seemed to stick around. We killed a spider right by the device! Our house is small so it should have been able to handle it. Used for Mice entrances By calid We used this product to keep mice from entering the house via the openings in the stucco. Easy to install, we learned to tape the ends when cutting to keep the bits of cut copper to a minimum. This should solve our problem, took us a few hours to place the wire, in larger, deep areas we used chicken wire AND mesh AND foam. We don't expect any more problems! Product was shipped quickly. Should also stop larger bugs like scorpions from getting in. Doesn't seem to work By Jennifer Coonce It is an audible and unpleasant buzz that I can hear (but was able to tune out after a while), and not long after I put two in my apartment I saw a mouse repeatedly frolicking in the vicinity of the device as if to taunt me. The mouse population seems to have increased, not decreased, in my home since I put them in. By Detailed Reviews I was skeptical about these, but since I could return them for my money back and I really wanted the mice to stay out (rather than to kill them after they got in!), I decided to give them a try. (I bought Model#: M753.) Before I bought these, I was catching 1-2 mice/day in traps. After plugging in the sonic repellers in the areas where I had been catching mice, I left the previous traps set and baited, as a test to see if there were still mice running around. NOTE: Advertising says the sonic waves are not audible to humans. NOT TRUE FOR THIS HUMAN! They make a very loud, continual, high-pitched squealing sound. Luckily, the areas I had been catching mice were in the garage and in the storage area under the stairs where I keep the door shut. So I've been able to block out the noise by having it behind closed doors. Since plugging in the repellers, NOT A SINGLE MOUSE HAS SHOWN UP in any of the traps!! This is a significant difference! It has only been 1 1/2 weeks, but before plugging them in, I would have caught many mice in that time. So it seems like they work great at repelling mice. I would recommend them only if you have an area that is wide-open so the sonic waves don't get blocked (it explains this on the packaging--I have to put them at the end of extension cords to get them out into the open), and only if you can close off the areas where you've seen mouse activity so that the noise the sonic repellers give off doesn't drive you bonkers. Oh, and my cats, who used to stalk the mice, no longer act like there are any mice around, and they don't have any reaction when they're near the doors behind which the sonic repellers are doing their high-pitched squealing. Even though there are a few caveats in my opinion, I give these 5 stars because the mice now appear to be staying away! If mice show up even with these things plugged in, I will update this review because I feel very strongly about it. So if there is no update, it means the mice are still staying away! The strobe light does work but here is what to watch out for By ecmedia After trying all sorts of things (moth balls, tea tree oil, lights on 24X7, live trap, etc.) that did not work to evict squirrels (they are very clever) from my attic, I did a lot of research and found that this was the most recommended product. It is fairly expensive, and I could not find a used one, so I bought a new one. One thing that is definite is that squirrels hate it, and it works right away in a simple attic. In other words, if your attic is totally flat and the light is be able to reach everywhere, you are all set. If you have a complex construction (as I did), you have to make sure that you put it so that the light reaches the hole from which squirrels go in and out. That way once they are out they won't come back in. At that point you should close the hole. 14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. It Works! By Clyde I have fought squirrels in our attic for years. I've blocked their routes. They just chewed more holes in my roof. I've shot them. More of them just moved in. I cut the trees by the house. They can climb anything. I finally gave this a try. Oddly, after ordering it, I learned that we also had raccoons in our attic. So, this was going to be an even bigger test. Sure enough, this immediately drove the squirrels off. The raccoons didn't leave within 48 hours, but they did leave within a week. Several months later the squirrels are staying out completely. We do have one in our yard, but he is building his Winter nest in a tree. He's not coming in at all. Two or three times we have heard the raccoons come back, but they only try it out for part of a night and then leave again. They obviously remember it as a good place to live and keep hoping that the light it gone. It isn't and won't be. A highly recommended product that works as stated. By LJK I have been battling squirrels in my attic for over 25 years. I have tried everything from have-a-heart traps, rat poison, rat traps, ammonia, antifreeze, exterminators, you name it nothing worked. I tried anything I would hear that worked for other people. We would patch the holes they chewed to get in, and they would chew another. They actually unpluged the Squirrel Evictor when we first put it in. We had to get an outlet cover to stop that. Now that they can't get to the plug it seems to be working. No more parties at 3AM in our attic. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it continues to work. I used it to rid my workshop of birds trying to nest inside. It could have hung from the rafter but I chose to weight it with sand and set it on the attic flooring. We bought this here to place on the floor of our basement for about 2 weeks. So far nothing has happened. The mice haven't died yet because I see that the pellets on the floor that they have dug in and took back to their home (along with rat droppings) all on the floor and clean it up. The next day there is more of the same stuff that I see. It's like these pellets are feeding them or someting and they're not dying. Next day two more caught, one by the tail, and one by the back leg, both alive. If you intend for this product to kill on impact you will not be pleased at the result. When it died, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a suitable replacement. Some of the other ones we've tried actually make a clicking sound that freak out our cats. This one seems to be working great. We haven't used any bug control chemicals/devices/etc for the ten years we've lived here and we still don't have to! We see a random small spider here or there once in a great while, but nothing that tells us it isn't working. Our cats don't mind it at all. Interestingly, a while back our town had a moth worm (?)infestation and they were crawling all over everyone's exterior walls. We didn't have any on our house. That showed me these products do work (when they work with the wiring of the house). We love it! And it's one less toxin in our environment. By Rubik Ohanians I have owned this product for nearly three weeks now and I love it simply because it really works! I have yet to spot a single spider or mice. The main reason that I bought this unit was to repel rodents away from my car. I just spent $4500.00 on my car to replace the engine wires and the main computer that was fried due to the rodents chewing on engine wires! This unit is really fantastic, I no longer see rat/mice trails any where near my house. There is only one thing that I 'm trying to find out and that is, why some of my guests can actually hear the unit? Plenty of Features, Poor Primary Performance By M. Bell I purchased this product, about 2 weeks ago, in the hopes that this type of pest repeller had improved since the last one I attempted 5 years ago. This item has a thoughtful design, including a pass-thru plug (2 prong) and nightlight, and the innovative addition of an air ionizer that made placing this in a bathroom or closet a multi-purpose solution. When I first plugged the unit into my downstairs bathroom outlet, my 2 cats 30 feet away in the living room started to growl and ran upstairs. My child came downstairs shortly afterward complaining about the painful warbling sound coming from downstairs. Apparently the ultrasonic frequency is outside of adult hearing, but adoloscent ears have a hammer and anvil response range beyond that of adults (until they're done growing, and the body loses flexibility, such as when the bones start to harden). I further tested the unit in the garage and an upstairs closet, but found the results were the same for both cats and family.
