A very effective and easy to use rat trap By mj I saw these at Home Depot and bought them even though they cost >2x a wooden rat trap. But these are so easy to use, they are easily worth a couple extra dollars. The packaging says the trap is designed for single use only, but I have been reusing them without any problem yet. It is easy to release the dead rat, reset the trap, and put it back where it was. We don't even change the peanut butter (Skippy), because it remains in the little well. All 4 of the rats we have caught were clamped completely around the neck, and one of them was 2 lbs (by the estimate of my fisherman buddy).Here are some tips:1. don't put in too much bait, as it makes the well too heavy to set. (That's true for the old wooden style as well).2. We are using these outside, so we now tether the trap with fishing line after one of them disappeared. I think a raccoon may have carted off the rat + trap. These plastic traps are quite light.In the past, I have used poison and glue traps for rats in the house. Sierra Bottom line, this trap works. I had a rat problem in an outside garden shed. I do not have small children and my old dog has long lost the ability to jump up on the shed ledges where I placed the traps so no concerns there. (She is an inside dog anyway!) Followed the directions including baiting with peanut butter and a little fresh fruit. Made sure I put the two traps with jaws facing against a wall about 10 ft. apart, also as per instructions. Did not concern myself with not leaving my scent, it had to be on all the tools in there anyway. First night nothing. Second night I went 2 for 2!! Big guys too! Traps did not move from original positions and no sign of any struggle so I think both kills were quick and merciful. My only advice is when I baited with a glob of peanut butter, it caused the trigger mechanism to stick in a down position and I could not lock the trap in the ready position even after several forceful tries. I took a plastic knife, lifted and held the trigger plate in position, and then the trap locked. To be honest, I may have been over zealous with the amount of peanut butter and that is what caused the problem. (I wanted to get those suckers!) The standard for rodent traps is, of course, the classic Victor. But this trap is better: it has more sure kill action, it's easier to load, fingers aren't exposed to the snap zone, it's easier and more sanitary to dispose of dead rodents, it washes off easily if needed, and best of all, it doesn't feel like you are handling a jug of nitroglycerin that will explode any moment when you carry it locked and loaded to its landing zone!I'm surprise that other reviewers found that it didn't kill the rodents, however, I have used the Victor traps and believe me, they too do not always kill cleanly. Rashid It took the attack wave pestrepeller about 5 weeks to clear out the pest (rodents)in my home. I live in an area that is surrounded trees and nature, so I had a problem with mice coming in when it gets cold. I bought 2 of the repellers, one for upstairs, and one for the downstairs area. I could hear the rodents at night and see them in the kitchen after everyone settled down for the night. This was quite disturbing for me, especially after purchasing this product, but I read that it could take up to six weeks for the pest repeller to work. The 4th week the mice sounded as if they were trying to eat the house up. You could hear them clawing like they were trying to find a way out. By Melissa Bishop We had just moved in our new home that had previously been a corn field and we starting finding mice droppings in our garage. We then found some in the house and decided to take action. Having 4 children under the age of 7 we wanted whatever it was to be safe. We contacted an exterminator who said they would have to use poision, but we might find dead mice in the house. We tried glue traps, caught some that way but who wants to dispose of the sticky mice. Tried the little sound things that plug into the walls. Didn't work. Found Shake away and our mouse problem was gone. That was 3 years ago and we still use this stuff. We had problems with wood rats getting under the car hoods and eating though spark plug wires Ect. The man i worked for had put out rat poisen, which works by de-hydrating the critters. Therefore they run to a water sourse before they die. Place as many of these as you can. Place traps to catch the mice, place peppermint oil on cotton balls in other locations around the house. Most importantly find the entry points and seal them, stuff holes with steel wool and seal the edges or plaster over if possible. I have a new home that's in a subdivision that isn't complete and for the last two fall and winter seasons we have been battling mice. It got really bad over the holidays when we were out-of-town for a week. The mice ran wild all over my house. It was extremely upsetting to come home to mouse droppings EVERYWHERE. I was very nervous about putting traps and poisons in my home, because I have a young son and a small dog and both are into everything these days. I got one and stopped seeing dropping and the mice within a few days. I have since gotten two more one for my garage and one for the other end of the house. I love that I don't have to worry about chemicals around son or cleaning up the dead animals. The instructions state there will be an increase of bugs as they flee the sonic vibrations that are irritating them. The units (3) have been in operation for about three weeks which is probably not enough time to fairly evaluate how well it/they work(s). I'll revisit this as I get more data; and, hopefully, less bugs in the house. Further information: while there are those who don't recognize a placeholder, or have the manners to wait for an accurate review, this, hopefully, will help a little more: all units have been in operation for about a month and I have noticed a drop in the bugs, specifically ants, around the kitchen and bathroom (where the highest concentration were). I also noticed that the two I found were far larger than any I'd seen previously and I believe them to queens which is very unusual. I looked it up on the Internet, and if the queen is out of the nest something is affecting the entire colony. So, given the lack of ants pestering us and the lack of general types of bugs usually found in this old house, I'd say the product works as advertised. Of note, you will notice a slight increase of activity before the bugs seem to go away so don't panic. Great enhancement for Ultra Rat Zapper By Space Queen I hesitated to spend the extra money on this, but I am SO glad that I did. I thought that I bought it as an indulgent convenience, but now I know that it enhances the efficiency of the Ultra Rat Zapper tremendously. This is a great enhancement to the Ultra Rat Zapper! I've had my Ultra Rat Zapper and Rat Tail for over two weeks with no activity. The Zapper is in the garage, and the Rat Tail on my kitchen floor. Well, 3 nights after the freely accessible dog food was removed from the garage (duh!), BINGO! I noticed the flashing lights of the Rat Tail within an hour. Because the Zapper had been sitting for so long with no activity, it wasn't on my mind, and I would not have thought to walk out to the garage to check on it. But because of the Rat Tail, I didn't need to think about it. I emptied the Zapper, reset it, and plugged in the Rat Tail and left it. Next pass through the kitchen...yep, the lights are flashing again! Woo Hoo! I dumped and resest the Zapper, went to bed, and woke up not thinking about the Zapper, even though it had been thrilling to catch two already. Another reviewer stated that the cord was 25 feet, but the product specs say it is only 12 feet. I think 12 feet is probably accurate. But that's plenty long enough for my uses. If you have any concern about the length, you might want to measure the distance from the location of the Zapper to a noticable placement of the Rat Tail, to make sure it will be sufficiently long enough. You wouldn't be reading this review unless you had a rodent problem. Bottom line: The rats aren't hanging out where you are. Buy the Rat Tail so it will be! Great addition to the Rat Zapper By Scott The Rat Tale is designed to be used with the Rat Zapper Ultra. It plugs into the top of the unit, and flashes whenever the trap has been activated. Since I had my Rat Zapper in the back of the attic, it was a big pain to go up into the attic every night to check the trap. Checking the trap a lot also discourages rats from entering it if it is constantly moved. The Rat tale has about a 12 foot long cord, and I was able to let it hang down from my attic (see picture). I kept looking up at it every time I came home, which I later found out was unnecessary since this thing flashes like crazy when it goes off. The LEDs are very bright so, there is little chance you will not notice is. Decent product but needs an AC adapter By Bug Artist I have been using two Rat Zappers for a few months now, with mixed results. They seem to work most reliably when the batteries are absolutely fresh. In particular, ordinary alkaline batteries seem to be good for one or two kills only. The recommended (and considerably more expensive) lithium batteries last a little longer, but the claim of "3 months or 15 rodent kills" seems to be marketing hype. Even with the optional "Rat Pack," the lethality diminishes rapidly after a few kills. Without absolutely new batteries, I often find the kill light will be flashing but nothing will be in the trap, suggesting that a rat received a non-lethal shock. That is a rodent that has now been trained to never set foot in such a trap again. What this product desperately needs is an AC adapter, so it can deliver consistently lethal shocks where an outlet is available. Alternatively, some better mechanism for determining when it's time to replace the batteries would be helpful, besides trying to judge spark length or the relative brightness of the LED indicator. I have found traditional snap traps to be more consistently effective for rat control, though I still use the Rat Zappers in areas where snap traps would be a danger to pets or children. I found that a mouse was caught the next morning. Reset it before I went to work. Got another one after I was back! After Zapper killed 11 of them, I declared my house is rodent-free! How can I tell? I scattered some dog food around, all of them were still there days later. I didn't bother to figure which one was mouse and which one was rat. But, some of them were quite big. I have a tip to offer. After several kills, the Zapper may get the smell of the dead rodents. The remaining ones won't come in any more. I have no patience and I put it out in the shed and turned it on. The second night I had my dead rat. Bought 2 zappers for the warehouse at work and in a couple weeks we killed the entire family. 2 adults, 3 teenagers and 2 babies. No one is eating the food now so we think we have them all. By CF Okay, I read all these reviews, and expected some problems because of the 1-3 star users. But I really can't deal with the mess and unpredictable results of spring traps, or the unwelcomed surprise of running across a dead mouse somewhere when I least expect it (poison). And I am squeamish! I really wanted this thing to work. So I called Victor (Woodstream Corp) and talked to someone in their Customer Care department. I asked her my favorite question, "Tell me all the tips that consumers are likely to miss, or misunderstand about how this thing works." And I also asked her tons of questions I had myself. Here is what I learned: 1. First and foremost, people overbait these traps BIGTIME. (See the 2nd photo provided by a customer.) If some of that huge mass of peanut butter falls onto the metal floor-plate, the trap zaps the peanut butter and de-activates! Mice can now come in and dine on the peanut butter. She said to just put a TINY dab of peanut butter on the far wall (opposite the entrance). Use a toothpick. Or spread a very thin smear of it with a knife. Mice have a very acute sense of smell, and that's what draws them in. They don't need any more bait than that. 2. The mouse has to contact BOTH metal plates in order to get zapped. And both plates have to be clean of debris. That means after you catch a mouse, take a Q-tip or whatever, and remove any hair, any little spot of urine, whatever, from the metal plates. This is not a squeamish job at all and they don't come anymore squeamish than I am! (I do shuddering freak-outs at the sight of a mouse, dead OR alive.) There was a teensy smear of liquid (I assume urine) and two hairs that had shed off the mouse. 3. Be aware that "On" means that the LINE icon side of the switch is pressed down. The CIRCLE icon pressed down means "off." People get those confused. Turn it OFF when cleaning or baiting. Turn it ON once the trap is baited, and the top door has been snapped shut. 4. The batteries go in with the flat side of the battery against the springs. And I have had battery connections with other things "not work." I had this problem continuously with a radio. Finally, it dawned on me, give a little pull on the springs. One was coiled into itself just slightly. That fixed it. You need the springs to push against the batteries enough to hold the two tight against each end. And they need to be lined up straight, not crooked. 5. When you bait the trap, close the door FIRMLY, and turn the unit on. You will see a green light BUT!!! it only stays on for 2 seconds! That green light is SUPPOSED to go off. It only goes on for the 2 seconds so that you can confirm that the unit is on, and it's working. Otherwise, if it stayed on all the time, it would eat battery life. So when it goes off, don't think, like I did, that there's an electronic failure. 6. For safety reasons, the unit is designed so that when the door (over the maze and metal plates) is open, the unit will de-activate. I have no idea how the other reviewer shocked himself, but for sure, turn the unit OFF before tinkering around with baiting, cleaning plates, or messing with the batteries. In any event, when you set the trap, bait it, then double check to make sure the door is snapped closed. Then, and only then, turn the unit on. You will see the green light for about 2 seconds, which shows you it's working and ready to go. Then the light goes out. If you open the door again (and she didn't say this but I have a feeling it's the case), turn the unit off and then on again after the door has been shut. I LOVE these traps! I don't have to even LQQK at the mouse, let alone have my fingers anywhere near where the mouse can brush against them. Also, as much as I detest mice because they are creepy, foul, dirty, slithery little things who dart and crawl around in mucky places, I do not want to torture them! I

I got all different types of traps all over but this is the only one that catches the critters. After using them for years, I found tricks to increase the chance of a catch. First, use them back to back facing different direction against a wall. Mice are near sighted so they run along walls to know where they are going. Second, put the traps where you see droppings. Mice is a creature of habit. They will return to the same routes all the time especially when they know there's food and where there's food, you will see their droppings. Third, make a thin trail of peanut butter leading to the feeding cup from the opening and add a small blob at the opening. Like an appetizer. The mouse will get a taste of the goods and will not be afraid to go into the trap for the feast. I know it sounds crazy but the traps I've laid out with the appetizer always get the mouse even with other traps side by side to it. Good luck. 42 of 44 people found the following review helpful. Never touch a mouse! By Francine Tepper I found these in a supermarket and have been using the four I bought 7 years ago, until they finally broke (hence my order here.) After a couple of nasty experiences with mice caught in glue traps (which are remarkably cruel!), I started looking for a better mousetrap and this is it. Once you set the latch, you know you've caught a mouse by the lever in the air and the tail trailing out the back of the trap. To get rid of the dead mouse, you pop the back, lift the lever up a little to release the snap and shake it out. You don't even have to look when you're doing this. Then you just have to reset them. We had a big problem a few years ago, and these traps were life (and sanity)-savers. Great product for it's purpose By A Customer I tried so many brands and wasted so much money on the "live" traps to curb my little visitors but after awhile they just procreate too fast and when you live in a suburban area it's a struggle. My biggest issue was getting something that "shielded" me from the gory details (yes, I know there are many activists up in arms) and this is a small, very effective trap. My advice would be to make sure and put a "sticky" bait on (peanut butter) verus cheese because there is a small opening in the back (that is needed to set the spring) where they can actually pull the cheese off and not go in the front of the trap. After searching around for solutions, this product appears to have the best solution to help with my rat problem. So far my Rat Zapper Ultra has caught 5 rats, and it is still going strong. I read some reviews complaining about battery life, I belive they are refering to the original Raz Zapper, not the Ultra version. The difference is that the Ultra version uses 'D' size batteries, which last much longer than the 'AA' used in the regular Rat Zapper. I have my rat zapper on for the last 3 month and the batteries are still ok. When it comes to catching rats, the fine details really matters. It is not easy to get them to take the bait. The bait that comes with the Rat Zapper didn't work at all. The rats don't care them at all. I had paced some of those bait outside the trap, and the rats won't even eat them. What I find works really well is peanut butter. What I do is use a glob of peanut butter about the size of a quater, and place it on a sheet of candy paper(I use the black circular paper from See's candy). The placement of the peanut butter should be skewed to one edge of the paper. Place the peanut butter bait inside the trap such that the peanut butter is just touching the metal grill at the end of the trap. That way, a rat can stick his paw in and get some sample of the peanut butter from outside of the cage. In addition, I smear a tiny amount of peanut butter on the outside of the metal grill to attract the rats, and gurantee that they can get a free sample. The rats just love peanut butter. When ever I have a catch, I notice that the peanut butter on the grill is alway licked clean by the rat, and they just can't resist going in to get the rest of the peanut butter once they have a good taste of the stuff. Another important procedure is to always wear disposable glove when handling the trap and bait material. Rats have really keen sense of smell. They tend to stay away from things with people smell. Wearing disposable gloves will help reduce the chance of transfering any scent to the bait and trap. The key feature of this product that sold me was the optional Rat Tale attachment. Since my trap is paced in the attic and I don't want to climb up to the attic daily to check on the trap, the Rat Tale is a great option to have. Rat Tale is a remote monitoring attachment to the Rat Zapper Ultra and it notifies me by flashing red light when ever there is a catch, so I only need to climb up to the attic when I see the Rat Tale flashing. One draw back of the Rat Tale is that is uses it's own internal battery for power and I'm sometimes worried that it might run out of power before I noice that there has been a catch. I really prefer to deal with the catch while it is fresh than to deal with smelly decomposed mess. The Rat tale is rated to run flashing alert for 20 days, so maybe it's not really an issue if you check on it on a regular basis. The Rat Zapper Ultra is a great mess free trap. Add the Rat Tale, it is truely convient when the trap needs to be place at inconvient locations. For total cost of $68 for both, it is turely worth it. There are other more expensive traps with true wireless remote monitoring ability out there, but they are very expensive. The Rat Zapper Ultra is the best solution for the lowest cost. I only wish I bought this earlier before I hade experimented with glue traps and snap traps. Fender We were having big problems with raccoons getting on our deck nightly and destroying flower pots, bird feeders, and anything else they thought might contain food. Got the two trap combination, as it was cheaper than buying the larger trap singly (?!?), and immediately set it out on the deck at dusk. The next morning I found the trap had been tripped externally (no 'coon), and dragged about 15 ft while being stripped of its bait (cat food). Changed the trap's location to a corner of the deck, placed a chair on the open side to prevent sliding and reach-ins, and reset it. Over the next four mornings I caught four raccoons, which I then spirited well away from the house. We have not had any raccoon incidents since. Be advised the trap door is spring-loaded, which traps better than gravity doors, but is more difficult to open when you want to release a scared and sometimes aggressive animal. Also be forewarned: trapped raccoons (and probably other animals) will seriously soil whatever the trap is placed on, and do they ever stink! Also, feral raccoons are a primary carrier of rabies, so use due care. Finally, be aware that you may not catch exactly what you intended. This happened to me years ago with a HavaHart trap (gravity door) when, instead of catching a rabbit, I caught a skunk. By slowing approaching the trap with an opened blanket in front of me (so the skunk couldn't see me), I used it as a cover, and was able to put the trap in my van and drive it away without getting sprayed. I then placed the covered trap down and slowly turned it over, allowing the door to open freely. I left the area for awhile, and the skunk was gone when I returned. The point of all this is, you can't release anything this way with a spring-loaded trap. The manufacturer would do well to incorporate a door opening lever or device which would allow the trapper to be at least reasonably clear during release. 10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. We live in the desert where scorpions are, well, unfortunately, a reality. And with 2 kids under 5 and another on the way, I'm taking the extra precautions. Like the other poster said, you'd be amazed what you catch with these things. Last summer we started putting these in the corner of our master, based on the suggestion of our exterminator (he wanted to see our activity). I was skeptical at first because I didn't think bugs would be crawling in those areas--I mean, I certainly didn't SEE any. Boy was I wrong! I was horrified! over the course of the summer, we caught spiders, roaches, scorpions, centipedes and other little things. I put them in the kids' bathroom and yup, caught some scorpions and centipedes. These are not meant for mice or heavier critters, as I've actually witnessed some of the larger spiders (mostly the ones with thicker legs--and they're by no means that huge) trying to and successfully escaping after getting stuck. Some of those spiders are determined! Needed something that would not hurt them, I bought these for that reason. They are easy to set and I can't imagine these hurting a person's finger. I place a bit of peanut butter on each and they do the job. Caught three mice in two days. I noticed that you can release the dead mouse into the trash without touching it, since the unit is made of hard plastic, I cleaned and reused.
